Finding the sweet spot in the oaks

I’ve been tweaking my stand placements in Wisconsin’s oak country trying to catch deer moving between acorn flats and bedding cover. Morning sits seem best near ridges, while evenings shine closer to feed. I also watch wind funnels and old rub lines before committing to a tree. Those hardwoods can be tricky but rewarding when you get it right. What’s your go-to stand setup in the oaks?

When hunting oak ridges, I like to go after squirrels first, watch for areas where deer are pawing up the leaves. Pay careful attention to prevailing winds, but also watch what the thermals are doing. There are places where there is no way possible to successfully hunt. You might get a fawn to wander through, but any adult deer will smell you.

I've tried scent loc suits, cover scents, smoking clothes, you name it. Thoroughly convinced that if you use fox urine for a cover scent that the deer snicker and wonder what stupid person got peed on by a fox. They will second guess their eyes and ears, but one whiff of human and their gone.

Good luck and happy hunting.

I like setting up just off the ridge where acorns drop heavy and wind stays steady. Catch them slipping through mid-morning or last light. Oaks test your patience, but payoff’s worth it
