There’s nothing quite like the thrill of deer season. I’d love to see your photos and hear your stories—what memorable moments did you have this year or in the past?

My favorite deer hunting story:

Around 1995 or so, hunting with my in-laws on a dairy farm around Dodgeville, I sighted in on a small buck about 80 yards away. Had a perfect sight picture when my 30-06 went off. The bucked jumped about four feet in the air and took off running. I figured that if I couldn't shoot it, I'd have to chase it down and choke it instead. I was hot on it's trail, only about 50 yards behind it (and gaining on it, by the way) when it suddenly did a back flip and dropped like a rock. A second or so later I heard a shot and looked across to another small hill and there was my 70-year-old mother-in-law, about 225 yards, away with her old 250-3000 lever action. She took it out straight through the heart while it was at a full sprint (also with open sights).

I discovered that I had lost the screw to my rear sight and it was just flopping around on top of the receiver. Even though my in-laws have passed on since then, I'm still hearing about it.

I'm sure there are some better stories out there, but this one is mine.

The memorable would be hunting my tail off in my beloved north woods. Bow season had me hunting 28 days with 36 sittings. I usually hunted afternoons, the 6 extra sitting were mornings and 2 an all day affair. I had 1 doe and a fawn come through my, Recurve kill zone, which I left walk. Not many deer seen, but everyday a smile on my face as I walked to my truck. Gun season had me in the woods, before dawn to dusk the 1st five days, without a deer seen. Thanksgiving was a day off as well as the next morning. Friday afternoon I saw my first deer of gun season, a doe, she was left to walk away also. I was to unfortunately, miss the Muzzleloader season completely.
Coming home, Manitowoc County had me out during the Friday morning of 1st antlerless hunt and I blooded my newly acquired deer rifle (not a 6.5mm) for its 1st time, taking one of 3 does I saw. Forward to the antlerless Holiday Hunt and now I'm quite excited as meat is in the freezer and I pulled out the heavy artillery, My 50's vintage, Marlin 336A, 32 Winchester special, Williams peepsight equipped. Home brewed 165gr, handloaded cast LFNgc bullets. Just like the 1st doe, 3 come out ironically at the same time as the 1st doe, at 8:30 a.m. One shot and a 10yard stumble, down with another.
Best part was they were in the back side of my property and a wheelbarrow was employed to haul them the 200yds to the meat locker (my shed)
My next hunting season is to start in June, of course it will be after a 16 hour plane ride. Then fall of '26 will be here before I know it and we will do it all over again.

Sounds like a great time with much fun in the sun. My buddy had requested that we take bucks only this year due to him not seeing as many deer as in the past. There were several dandy bucks as well as many good bucks in the area as seen on our trail cams. Out of our group only one buck was taken, not one of the dandys but a huge 8 point weighing in 180 pounds field dressed. For me getting a deer is nice but not necessary. I just like getting out. Did see several does, but let them walk back into the woods. There is always next year.

My son was able to get the only buck at camp this year in the desolate northern forest region. A huge spike buck, I may have to enter it in the WIDNR's, new trophy deer, north of Hwy 8, buck contest, of course in the, none wolf kill division. Im thinking it may be a solid 3rd place this year. I may be wrong but I hear at last check a 3 pointer was in 1st place.
In all seriousness though, We do have a few left as my cameras have proven. But the damage has been, unfortunately, done. In the county where I live I could have and should have killed more (does), but there are only so many I can utilize and feel like cutting up. There's a reason why we have a antlerless season to include a Holiday hunt and an extended archery season here, way to many deer on the private, locked up land. Public DNR managed lands vs. private.

I've shot a lot of deer over the years; however, it took me 28 years to finally get my first wall mounter. I was blessed to harvest this really nice eight pointer in Dane County this season. 17-1/2" inside spread and 19-3/8" outside spread with beautiful color.
