Tradition that seemed normal until you realized it's actually weird

We grew up thinking everyone opened one present on Christmas Eve. Found out as an adult that's not universal and some people think it's sacrilege. What tradition did you think was normal until other people looked at you like you were crazy? Let's hear the weird ones.

We always rang a bell before opening gifts, don't even know why. Everyone had to be there, even the dog. Other families probably thought we were nuts .
