I used to have real trouble with thick gloves. Then I started wearing liners with mitts over them...now my hands stay warm and I can still move my fingers! If your gloves don't keep your hands from freezing when you tie knots, you should try it.

I've had good results with Smartwool liners under simple wool mitts. They keep me warm even when they're a bit wet and I can still feel the knots.

I had a pair that were actually made for winter bicycle riding. You could pop fingers out if needed. They were well lined and the outside was leather. If needed you could fit a pair of woolies underneath. And if I had really cold fingers I had a small wool wrap that I could stick my hands into. Yes, I am a weenie about cold hands!:)
