For those who regularly go to gun shows, do you have any advice on what to expect and what to avoid for someone going for the first time? What do you wish someone had told you before your first gun show?

Here's what I suggest: bring cash, look around the whole show before you buy anything, and don't hurry. Costs can be all over the place. And expect to see a lot of garbage. There are some good finds but you have to dig for them.

Bring your phone. With cell phones, people know what they got. Like was said earlier, there's deals out there, but they are few and far between. Cash talks BS walks.
Also don't go alone if you can help it. Go with a friend or two, make sure that all of you know what each other is looking for and then scatter out looking for things that your buddies or girlfriends are looking for. Keep in touch with your cell phones and if you come across something your friend is looking for make sure that you let them know what it is you found, condition and where it's located. Let your friend do the haggling, after all it's their money.

First of all..... DONT GO!!! It'll be habit forming and cost you thou$and$ or more, over your lifetime.
Robin1's advice above is excellent, dont be in a hurry and dont be dead set on or to eager to buying something. As an example, I need another Ruger revolver like I need a new wife. One wife is way more than enough, believe me, but Rugers can get to multiplying. Found/saw a 3 screw 6 1/2" on a table, didnt talk to the guy just noticed it and walked on to look at the rest of the show. We left and the more I thought of it the more I thought I actually really really need it. A stop at an ATM and I went back, as I was also "Shopping" with the Wife and daughter, we stopped on the way back through. Nearing the end of the day, Saturday, I went back in and asked if he would take $600 for the $700 he was asking for it. $old!!
So if your not set on having to have it, now, timing is everything, they are more likely to deal at the end of the day, instead of having to take it home and try again.
