Has anyone taken courses in Wisconsin they'd recommend? I am interested in defensive shooting or even just better fundamentals, I am not trying to go full tactical operator, just want to actually know what I'm doing out there

Join a Gun Club... there are usually a few older guys and or gals that would be willing to take someone under their wing and give them a few pointers and teach them the fundamentals of safety. Being new here myself in Wisconsin I am also on the lookout for a good place to shoot at my leisure. Shooting at an indoor range is nice but when you are paying for a lane by the hour you sometimes feel rushed.

I used to teach both rifle/pistol and concealed carry, pretty much retired these days. If you are serious about learning properly get in touch with the USCCA (https://www.usconcealedcarry.com/) to pair you up with an instructor that knows what they are doing. Since you are in Jefferson county, I would highly recommend Fletcher Arms (https://fletcherarms.com/) at their new store in Pewaukee. Great facility, great people and some really good instructors who are both NRA and USCCA certified. They are located at 1228 Hickory Street in Pewaukee. The address is the back of the store, the front and entrance is on Watertown road. Phone number is 262-549-4488.

That is super smart to focus on fundamentals right away, you'll save yourself years of bad habit,s unlike some persons .I'd second the recommendation for Fletcher Arms in Pewaukee, especially since you’re in Jefferson County. They run quality, formal classes that give you a good foundation without all the flashy nonsense. I agree with Indigo22, local clubs are gold. Find a local USPSA or IDPA match where people focus on practical shooting, guys there are usually super friendly and will give you honest, free tips that will fix your grip and stance faster than any book. You'll actually learn how to run your gun under pressure

I really appreciate the specific recommendation...Fletcher Arms looks great, and having both NRA and USCCA certified instructors is exactly what I'm after. I'll give them a call, thanks for the detailed info and contact details

Thanks for the voucher on Fletcher Arms, two recommendations seals it. The USPSA/IDPA match idea is smart too, never thought about learning in that environment

Where in the state are you located?
As probably everyone knows by now I am located in the Madison area. As for training in Wisconsin, a much overlooked training venue is the Boy Scouts. You have to join and take their basic training for adults and will have to pass a background check. They offer instructor training for BSA members however expect to teach the fundamentals of both rifle and pistol to the boy/girl scouts. Self defense look at Fletcher Arms in Pewaukee. Great people teach both NRA and USCCA self defense courses. Top Notch training for sure.
