I bought one of those fancy range bags

I tried a few of those fancy shooting bags, and I'm with you, the single compartment gym bag is much better.

I stopped using tactical bags a long time ago. Now I just use a canvas duffel bag with maybe three pockets. It means less digging around, I can get set up faster and my shoulders feel way better.

This is so true. Simple bags last longer and I get to spend more time shooting instead of digging around for stuff.
