Welcome to the forum, Sir. I think you have been in Wisconsin all of your life as your post suggests.
A bit older than me for sure.
Grouse and Woodcock? Must have a keen eye and sharp shooting skills. They are difficult to master.

I adopted Wisconsin back in the 60s when I joined the Army and left the godforsaken state of corruption and confusion they call Illinois at 17, I spent 30 years in the Army, the last 4 on an AGR tour with the Wisconsin Army National Guard. Retired in 1994, been here ever since. I used to hunt ducks, geese, pheasant, rabbit deer and coyotes. These days at my age I am down to hunting turkey and deer. I am primarily a rifle person, always have been. I am an accuracy nut, trying to put bullets through the same hole on a target at 100 yards or more. Enjoy buying rifles off the shelf and trying to get them to shoot sub MOA without as flew modifications as possible, preferably only mounting a good scope. I shoot out at the Deerfield Rod and Gun Club, I like the fact that while not fancy the rifle and pistol ranges are open from 8 am until sunset 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Always looking for someone to shoot with so if anyone in interested in meeting up to send a few rounds down range, let me know.

A bit older than me I think. Only 60. Been here ALL of my life. Central and Southeastern Wisconsin. Good for you with your service. My Brother also served over 20 years in the Marines. Combat experience in Iraq. Grandfather earned a Purple Heart(which I possess) in France in 1944. Uncle served in Vietnam.
I still currently hunt ducks, turkeys and deer with my wife of 37 years.
Are you only trying to PUSH your current "shooting" arena to all of the members here?

I'm old and I know it. That makes it hard to find shooting partners. More fun when there are more than me on the range, and we are talking and shooting together. I served in Vietnam, TET 68 sent me home from the war. Am I trying to push my current shooting arena, yup it's a great place to shoot. Ranges are open from 0800 until sunset every day. They ain't fancy but they are functional. It is a private club, members only but annual membership is currently $60 for regular members, 30 for seniors (over 60) and $10 for juniors, which makes it extremely affordable compared to anywhere else in the area. Come shoot with me, rifle or pistol.

So you are nearly 20 years older than I am. My Father-in-law also 20 years older escaped the Vietnam War by having a child, my wife. My Uncle served in Guam. Not the front lines, as I assume that you did.
Happy that you still enjoy shooting toys. They are very costly. I have done this in the past. I am an excellent shot with a rifle, but do not need validation from anyone else at a "range", waste of money at this time. Maybe you still do. I thank you for whatever service you gave to this country. Still support the direction of this country?

Well let's start out with the validation comment. I don't need anybody's validation. I don't really care if you can out-shoot me or not. I shoot against myself, always have. I am the only person I have to beat. As mentioned before, I like to put tiny little groups in as close to the center of the target as possible. It's my thing, and I will continue to try to make 3 or 5 shot groups that are a ragged one hole. That is what makes me happy. I also know that when hunting, if I miss the target it's not the rifles fault, it means that I blew it, which sometimes does happen. What I would like is to have someone else out at the range shooting at the same time, but them doing their thing while I do mine. Plain and simple. I like Deerfield not only because its the most cost effective club in the area, but the ranges are open 7 days a week, 8am to sunset. I do my shooting weekdays, various times. I leave the weekends to others.
As for shooting toys, I have a few, and they change on a somewhat regular basis. I don't shoot anything exotic. I don't shoot chassis guns. All of my rifles are stocked with wood or composites and in a conventional style that has been around at least since I was a young woman and most likely longer.
As for the question about still supporting the direction of this country. Based on the above and 30 years of service I think you pretty much know the answer to that question. Not into discussing politics, especially here.
Firearms and ammo are never a waste of money unless you buy crappy firearms, and there are many some that even cost a lot and shoot terrible. Crappy ammo is also available in both cheap or very expensive versions. Ammo can be either good or bad, doesn't matter who makes it or what it costs and what shoots good in one gun may not shoot well in others. In the end it's all fun trying to put together something out of the box that you can get to shoot well.

We think alike. I don't compete except against myself and my timer. I also agree about the ammo, that is why I reload.

I also compete against myself on the range. I have one rifle, a 22Lr, an old but accurate one when the stars and ammo align (one hole at 25yds and dime size at 50yds if I am not wound up on caffeine). Okay, I have to do my part... I'm more of a plinker and shoot my pistols, mostly 22's, for fun and self defense practice. I gave Steel Challenge a try but the group putting on the event were as new to the game as I was. I had to challenge their no hit calls twice as I heard the shots hit steel and they didn't. Fourth round in I double tapped all five of the targets and asked if I hit them all this time. As expected when things got tallied up I wasn't at the front of the pack but I also was not at the back. Never tried the game again. I'd be willing to give it a try again in the right circumstances.
I'm looking forward to my move to WI in the next week and have already been checking out where I can shoot without a crowd. Seems the private clubs are the answer for this.
