Was out collecting leeches on public land in southern Wisconsin this past week.
A routine spot that I check daily. One day this past week I pulled into the same spot and noticed someone had thrown a tom turkey into the woodline next to the parking spot almost like they were comming back after it at a later time. Went about my buisness but the more I thought about it the madder I became, so I called the DNR and reported what I saw. Came back the next day and it was gone so the warden or the poacher came for it. BTW it was clearly not a vehicle kill and it was relatively fresh.

That would absolutely get me going as well.. I hate it when people don't respect the game they take and the laws pertaining to the harvest. Good call W.E.

Just for the record, Turkey season is open in Wisconsin. It's Toms only in the spring, so perhaps it wasn't a poached bird. Extra bonus tags are available so it is possible that the hunter simply stashed the first bird while in pursuit of another, with the intent of collecting it on the way back to their car or truck. A dead turkey is not something that a person would normally carry around with them when in pursuit of yet another legal turkey.

Im with Tabby on this one. To many times people just go with the worst case scenario, because of over thinking and getting mad. Yes calling authorities is a basic response and a good one, Even though they have been known to mess things up just because they know more than you and abuse their authority.

How can you stash a bird when there is no other vehicle around
and why stash it
why not put it in your vehicle and get back after it if that is indeed the manner in which this came to be
makes no sense bonus tags are not issued for the early season

A lot depends on how far the bird was found as opposed to where the hunters car was located. It quite possibly was a long way away from where you found the bird. You are totally incorrect about the bonus tags. There are bonus tags available for all of the seasons from the first to the last and they are valid anytime you want to use them, even multiple tags on any given day. Since there is no requirement to literally tag a bird anymore, calling it poached is simply not a valid assumption, especially since it was no longer there the next time you looked.

look you have idea what you are talking about
you were not there
there was no car within 2 miles of my location the bird was dumped
I do not know how you hunt but hunters do not leave their game for later retival
plain as day what happened
you also must have missed the part where I said I called the warden it was he or your friendly poacher who came back for it
so why with e- registration would someone leave their game behind your premiss just don't hold water

Yes you're right we, were not there, you were. Instead of arguing about it why not follow up with the DNR and report back here on the findings. Unless of course that was the whole premise of your post, to assume various scenario's and then argue about it. 6 posts after the initial one and its gone off the rails. I've seen it go quicker but nice job. On a side note did you call, talk to a bonified DNR personal, give your name, where you can be located, Phone#, etc. the area of the alleged violation, or, hit up the tip line anonymously?
Why do I ask, you say? Well its very pertinent for us to know, it hinges vicariously to whether you would even wanting to call for the follow up.

Maybe I don't have any idea what I am talking about, but I think that you answered your own question when you said that there was no car (that you knew of) within two miles of your location. Poachers, generally don't leave the game they poached behind. Conversely hunters often stash game that they have shot while they do something like go and retrieve their car, truck or that is possibly miles away without having to haul a twenty plus pound bird or large animal along when they can stash it, and drive a car, truck or other vehicle to the location where they left their game and pick it up. I know that I have in fact dragged a deer out of the woods to the side of the road, gone and got my truck or a tractor to get it out of the woods without having to physically drag it any further than I already had. Argue if you want, but I am done listening to your justification to your argument. Hope you caught a lot of leeches and catch a lot of fish. Have a great day.
