Planning a trip to visit family soon and trying to figure out the best route. I want to bring a firearm with me, but going through New York State makes that kind of tricky. I've heard some horror stories about road trips through NY, so I'm weighing my options. Avoiding NY adds a ton of drive time. Has anyone else dealt with this? I'd love to hear what you decided to do. I'm open to any suggestions that might help make the trip smoother.

Frequent traveler through there. Firearms are in a locked case in the trunk of the vehicle. Ammo locked in a separate case, usually on the back seat floorboard. Remember you are traveling through the state. If I were to be stopped for some reason I would not volunteer the information that I have either.
I don't believe that there is any state in the lower 48 that has it illegal to transport firearms. If you don't know their specific laws, and want to make absolutely sure that you are not in violation, then unloaded, locked up, separate from ammo, and not in reach of the driver should see you safely through. And like John said above, there is no reason to declare to anyone that you are transporting a firearm.
It's pretty universal that it is against the law to lie to a police officer, so if asked it's best to admit there is a firearm in the vehicle. If you have a concealed carry that is recognized in the state you are currently in, be sure to let him know up front that you have a concealed carry. If your firearm is loaded advise them of that and tell them where it is located. DO NOT GO TO SHOW THEM WHERE IT IS UNLESS ASKED. As mentioned above, separate unloaded/cased firearms and ammo without either being readily available to the driver and if possible, passengers.
Learn what states require that you are passing through. Worst case is you have to keep gun and ammo in separate lock cases. A lot of states recognize each others concealed carry license so in those states you can keep your gun accessible.
