I am curious to hear everyone’s stories, what was the very first firearm you ever shot and how did it go?

My first firearm was when I was 6 or 7. My dad was left eye dominant and in those days left hand guns were pretty rare. He shot pump guns because they work well for southpaws. Dad had bought me a Daisy pump BB gun (model 25 IIRC) and told me when I could shoot out a candle (he made me a range in the basement) he would let me shoot his model 12 Remington. 22 . So one fine day I took dad to the basement and put a candle out 3 times in a row. He told me that my uncle was coming over and he would take me out shooting tomorrow. I walk outside and there is this 13 lined ground squirrel right in the back yard (we lived on a farm) so I ran to ask dad if I could use his .22 to shoot it. He was with my uncle and didn't want me to bother him,so I went and grabbed the .22 and shot that gophers. At the sound of the shot here comes dad and he is MAD. He was going to make sure that I didn't sit down for at least a week. My uncle stepped in and told dad the he had told me that I could shoot the .22 after I put out the candle. Dad cooled down and after that I had free reign of his .22.

That’s a fantastic story...you really earned that .22, and I love the candle test!

Like alot of kids growing up in the 60's I had a daisy spittin' image, I was 6 at the time, and the next Christmas was a Crossman pump .22 cal air rifle. Similar to the Benjamin's at the time. But the 1st firearm and I'm 98% sure on this was a Winchester Model 55 22 cal. single shot. Interesting little 22, we called it a single shot automatic, as it would fire the round and would blow back the bolt cocking the gun for the next round and ejecting the spent case out a bottom port. My younger brother wanted to shoot it one day so I loaded it up and showed him the safety, on the tang, how to load it through the top of the receiver, push the safety forward and shoot. I was smiling as he shouldered it and took aim, at the shot his left hand came from holding the gun and he was shaking it vigorously. If you got your hand under the ejection port that spent 22 shell would fall into it and it was H-O-T! I had a good laugh, but, dont ask me how I knew that "could" happen.

A Remington Model 33 .22 that my mom and dad plinked with while going together. I'd say I was about 7-8 when it was a different world. Still have it.
