My family member saw my AR and immediately started with the 'why do you need that' speech. I explained hunting, sport shooting, Second Amendment rights. They didn't agree but at least they understood my reasoning. You don't owe everyone an explanation for your legal hobbies, but sometimes education helps reduce fear-based reactions
.

I gave up trying to win those online debates. Now, if someone’s open to it, I just take them shooting. Nothing beats ten minutes behind the trigger to settle a stubborn argument more than an hour of typing ever could.

I too have had that discussion. The response that ended it was along the lines of "I appreciate your opinion. If you would like to learn more about the hobby, let me know... happy to help". Discussion short and sweet and no one seemed buthurt over the whole matter. Decided a long time ago I would never be able to change the mind of these looneytoons. Just want them to stay away from me. ;)

I have never run into that type of attitiude in any of my family
Grew up hunting in a hunting family so was never asked such a question
