I used to break my wrist on every shot and wonder why I was printing low and left. One hour with a good coach fixed what two years of "self-correcting" couldn't. :)

It's a lot easier to create a bad habit, than it is to break it. I see people teaching their girlfriends, children, and wives bad habits all the time. If you try to tell them what they are doing wrong the sh!t will hit the fan. I don't know the best way to approach this problem.

There is no good way to approach the problem, for me being female doubles the issue even when on the range and seeing a guy doing something wrong. Men don't like to be told they are doing something wrong by a woman, so there is that. They would rather continue to make the same mistake over and over than admit to it. As for trying to tell someone that they are teaching something wrong in front of said wife or girlfriend, there is no good way to do that. If you can't get them off to the side away from the one they are trying to teach all that will happen is that they will become angry with you because you made them look bad in front of the person that they were trying to teach.

The biggest issue with someone trying to teach another how to shoot is the firearm they are shooting. If it's anything but a .22 things are not going to end well. Recoil will make shooting uncomfortable for the fledgling shooter who is trying to learn with a 9mm, 38, 357 or 45.

I see so many people take a first time shooter out, hand them a 12 ga. shotgun and tell them to have at it. I was at a club last fall.they were holding a sight in days before hunting season. Guy hand his 10-12 year old kid a New England Firearms single shot to shoot. When the kid shot it the ground shook. Turned out to be a 45-70. He said the kid had never fired a gun before. I let the kid shoot my 243.

As a hunter safety instructor as well as NRA certified instructor I have observed dad giving a young kid grandpa's hand-me-down 30-06 as a first time hunting rifle. If the kid is big enough to handle the rifle I simply remind the Dad that this might not be the best rifle for a first time hunting rifle. If the kid is smaller, like most 12 to 14 year-old kids are. I will usually explain the issue to Dad and recommend that they get another rifle, maybe a 243 for them so they can get used to the light recoil before taking on something heavier. Most, but not all did not think about recoil issues and listen to the advice. Then there are the others.

My first hunt was with a Savage side by side 20g. It was a well balanced piece that was easy to shoot. I was told up front to cradle it into my shoulder tightly and remember no huge pain. That gun became mine and still shoots ever so sweetly.
